BBC America’s BROADCHURCH, which earned critical acclaim and broke records on Twitter in the UK, centers on the investigation into the murder of a young boy in a British seaside town.
Leading the investigation are two detectives — the strong yet compassionate local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (OLIVIA COLMAN, Twenty Twelve, The Iron Lady), and the by-the-book Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (DAVID TENNANT, Doctor Who, Spies of Warsaw), Ellie’s newly appointed boss.
By circumstance they are partnered to solve the murder, keeping the newspapers from derailing the investigation and trying to prevent the crime from impacting tourism at the beach where the boy was murdered.

Meet the Designer Behind Those ‘Doctor Who’ Movie Posters
Last year, in the preview for Season Seven, Doctor Who‘s producers announced that each of the episodes would pack the punch of a blockbuster movie. And in keeping with that aim, a dramatic, movie-style poster would be released for each installment. The campaign proved extremely popular, with fans enthusiastically collecting and dissecting each image for details and references. We spoke with Lee Binding, Doctor Who‘s talented graphic designer who helped bring these visions to life, about his sweet gig, the collaborative process with producers and the team behind the posters, and the single image that took three months to create.
What’s your history with Doctor Who as a fan?
Lee: I remember my mother calling me downstairs when I was six, yelling “Doctor Who‘s on! You like that!” and me thinking “Do I…?” but going downstairs anyway. She was right, you know.
Were you the kid who sits in the back of the class doodling in notebooks?
Lee: Yeah, actually I was. I was obsessed with the shape of the Police Box. When I first started, it was like little Amelia Pond’s rough oblong models, but you keep trying and eventually you get all the detail in there — the roof and the door flanges and stuff like that. I love that Police Box. It’s a beautiful shape, and I love what it represents: the start of the adventure. I’ve seen some fan artwork where they’ve put the TARDIS on a planet, and the door’s open with the light spilling out. That for me is just the most exciting image ever. Anything can happen!

BAFTAs: Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker on What to Expect from BBC AMERICA’s ‘Broadchurch’
If you want to know what Brits were watching this past spring, the answer wasBroadchurch, the critically acclaimed drama that made the fictional killer of a young boy in a sleepy seaside town the topic of national conversation. The cast, led by David Tennant and double BAFTA winner Olivia Colman as detectives investigating the murder, had to keep the series’ central secret under wraps until the explosive finale, which garnered huge ratings for British network ITV and became the most tweeted-about drama episode of the year.
Broadchurch will soon be coming to BBC AMERICA, and our Alan Moloneycaught stars Andrew Buchan and Jodie Whittaker on the rain-drenched red carpet of the BAFTA TV awards in London yesterday (May 12) to chat about what viewers here can expect from the first season. “A lot of tears,” says Whittaker.
