Brits vs. Americans in ‘Chef Race’ across America
According to the first two episodes of “Chef Race: U.K. vs. U.S.,” the United States is a nation of grillers. Please pass the bison burgers.A new reality show made for BBC America, it pits 16 chefs split into two teams in a race across the United States. Eight chefs are from the United Kingdom, and the other eight are Americans.”It’s got emotions of ‘The Apprentice,’ ‘Master Chief,’ (all) sort of rolled into one, but, of course, it’s got a lot more rugged,” says executive producer Jamie Oliver, known for his “Food Revolution” on ABC and other cooking shows. “There’re lots of different kinds of chef. … You got people that work in street food, pop-up (stands) and people that are artisans. All competing, with literally no money, to get across the States.”
The culture clashes are jarring at times.
Not the cultural menu choices, but the mind-sets of the two teams. By the end of the second episode, several chefs on each side stand out, not for their cooking, but their unpleasant personalities.
"It’s not just about England vs. America, which is obviously a good premise, it’s also the individual battles," Oliver says. "There’s only one winner, so it’s really everyone for themselves, but, at the same time, they have to be team players."
Details are in on the Jamie Oliver-produced BBC America show, Chef Race: UK vs US: first of all, it premieres on October 2 at 9:00PM ET, although there is a “special preview” on September 29 at 10:00PM. So, pick one? Anyway, Chef Race pits a group of British chefs against a group of American ones as they race across the country from Los Angeles to New York doing things like cooking entire bisons. It stars a bunch of chefs that are likely unfamiliar to American audiences — with the possible exception of Sugar Ray drummer Stan Frazier, who is apparently a “a passionate home cook.” It’s unclear whether Jamie Oliver ever actually appears on the show; it’s hosted by Claire Robinson of the Food Network’s 5 Ingredient Fix and British restaurateur Richard Corrigan.

There’s also a preview that reveals the fact that the chefs all wear bandanas with their flags on them, and also one British chef tells an American, “We have morals. Obviously you Americans don’t.” Fun.

Chef Race: U.K. vs U.S. - BBC AMERICA’s all-new original series from Executive Producer Jamie Oliver
From executive producer Jamie Oliver, Chef Race: U.K. vs. U.S. pits 16 chefs, eight Brits versus eight Americans, against each other as they race across the country in the hopes of winning a grand prize of $100,000 dollars. Michelin-starred London restaurateur, Richard Corrigan (Masterchef), serves as a mentor and judge and Claire Robinson (5 Ingredient Fix) hosts the new BBC AMERICA original series.
The race begins on the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, where Team U.K. and Team U.S. are stripped of their cash and credit cards and challenged to cook to survive, cook to prosper and cook to win. In the 10 one-hour episodes, the teams battle coast to coast from Los Angeles to New York City, with the chefs living off their culinary skills and business savvy to survive and make it to their next destination. In the beginning, they will work as teams and cook to turn a profit. The team with the biggest profit moves on and the losing team faces elimination, but in the end, there will only be one winner. Chef Race: U.K. vs. U.S. premieres with two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday October 2, 9:00pm ET and 10:00pm ET on BBC AMERICA.
BBC AMERICA will present a preview of episode one on Saturday, September 29, 10:00pm ET following the mid-season finale of Doctor Who.
